Thistle Theatre Presents: Three Billy Goats Gruff

Thistle Theatre Presents: Three Billy Goats Gruff

The puppeteer production is a hilarious version of the Norwegian story about the Three Billy Goats Gruff attempting to cross a bridge.

One day, “Kid”, the youngest Billy Goat Gruff, goes off in search of green, green grass and is startled by a River Troll! The River Troll tells him that there are many kinds of trolls in Norway, and assures Kid that he is one of the nice trolls. Learning this, Kid begs the River Troll to take him to the green, green grass on the other side of the river. After a slippery attempt, the River Troll changes his mind. Kid’s brother, “Junior” comes along and in many inventive ways they attempt to cross the river. Unfortunately, one of the attempts puts them in grave danger and the River Troll has to save the two younger Billy Goats Gruff. After much begging, and against his better judgment, the River Troll agrees to build a bridge by morning. He warns them, “When you build a bridge, you are sure to get a bridge troll.” Sure enough, as soon as it is built, a Bridge Troll comes along and starts sleeping under “his” new bridge.

When the Three Billy Goats Gruff see the new bridge, the oldest “Big Billy” refuses to let them cross because, “where you find a bridge, you are sure to find a bridge troll.” Despite multiple warnings, Kid cannot resist and comes back to cross the bridge. As he starts to cross he hears from below, “Who’s that trip-trapping across my bridge?” It’s the cranky Bridge Troll and he is not about to let anyone pass. Will the Three Billy Goats Gruff ever get to eat the green, green grass on the other side of the bridge?

The production features Bunraku, full-body, and rod puppets. Thistle Theatre specializes in tabletop Bunraku, an ancient Japanese style of puppetry. Puppeteers Ben Burris and Brian Stabile play multiple roles in the production directed by Jean Enticknap. Enticknap co-adapted the story with Sue Ennis who also wrote four original songs for the production. The puppets were designed and built by Brian Kooser.
